What's so special about a 16th birthday anyway?
You can’t drink, you can’t drive, you pretty much dislike all of your family at this age, it’s no relgious significance (like a Quincenera).. I don’t get why everyone makes such a big deal about it. The girls at my school host these huge parties (which seem more like weddings). They have a court, rent limos and tuxedos, hire all sorts of singers/dancers/entertainers, buy ice sculptures, etc. I think this is so stupid and self-absorbed. Sure, we’d all like to be the center of attention for a day (I know I’d love to have one) but I feel like these girls all seem so spoiled and can’t wait to spend daddy’s money. Anyone agree with me?
Umm Anna, that was one of the most stupid and irrevalent answers ever. How is stating my opinion about a Sweet 16 being promiscuous? And my question clearly says "except for Quinceneras which are done for religious purposes"

Turning sixteen is a step in maturity. Some see it as I’m old enough to drive this is more responsibility. It’s also a time in your life where you are moving on from middle school and truly becoming a high schooler. Some people celebrate for the wrong reasons, such as the girls you are talking about. Turning 16 should feel like a step towards adulthood to you and if not it’s still a birthday and everyone likes to celebrate a birthday. good luck!

I think you’re very mature for your age.
At 16 I was horribly depressed, anxious, self conscious and sexually frustrated. 21 was more like the special birthday. Still it isn’t an excuse to throw a wedding party for one.

Oh my!!! Howcome I couldn’t meet somebody who thinks like this? You’ll find that when you boil it down, a great deal of what people celebrate is really about nothing. Limousines, Ice Sculptures? Your friends must be millionaires. I don’t know anyone who does that for a 16th although I had one friend who had glamour pictures done for her 16th. What’s the point?
